About

The Pomona-Pitzer Women Athlete's Archive is a digitized archival collection from the Pomona Archive, Special Collections, and Rains Center for Sport and Recreation located at Pomona College in Claremont, California. The archive is a mix of the past and the present, housing historical photos and materials along with interviews of current day Pomona-Pitzer female student-athletes and alumni. The project seeks to promote and discuss the history of female participation in collegiate sports, celebrating past and current athletic achievements. This archive is not entirely comprehensive, as photographs and materials were chosen based on personal interest, as well as the goal of digitizing as wide a variety of women’s sports as possible. The decision to select only some of the photographs and materials to be included in this archive was a pointed one, for it allowed time to explore and digitize in multiple locations and permitted a narrowing of the content to what was perceived to be the most valuable information. Therefore, it should be recognized that this archive does not represent all of the photographs and materials housed at all three of the locations researched.

Pomona-Pitzer Athletics is a Division III athletic program shared between Pomona College and Pitzer College in Claremont, California. Pomona College was a founding member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) where P-P athletic teams continue to compete.

The creator, Aubrey Douglass, graduated from Pitzer College in 2016 where she was a history major and media studies minor. She competed on the women's lacrosse team all four years of her collegiate career and served as a captain in her senior year.

"The creation of this archive was complex and multifaceted but it was work that was extremely informative and enjoyable. My hope is that the Pomona-Pitzer Women Athletes Digital Archive will increase people’s knowledge and access to a powerful photographic collection and bring attention to the history and accomplishments of women athletes for Pomona-Pitzer athletics. Lastly I hope new historical content will continue to be created and added to the archive, helping construct a diverse history of Pomona-Pitzer female athletes. " - Aubrey Douglass
